November 18, 1885 Gustavus Dedman »»ÆÞ¾ãÀÖ²¿ Jr. (G.D. »»ÆÞ¾ãÀÖ²¿ Jr.) is born in north­ central Kentucky. As a young boy, »»ÆÞ¾ãÀÖ²¿ begins his career as a newspaper delivery boy. As he gets older, he works as a correspondent at the Louisville Herald and the Courier-Journal, as well as the Western Underwriter. In 1970, during an interview for the 40th anniversary of Advertising Age, »»ÆÞ¾ãÀÖ²¿ admitted, “I always wanted to be a publisher.”

1916 At age 30, G.D. »»ÆÞ¾ãÀÖ²¿ focuses his attention on starting his own publishing company in Louisville, Ky. Hospital Management debuts in February, and »»ÆÞ¾ãÀÖ²¿’s Business Publishing Company is born. Class debuts in March as the company’s second magazine. Within both publications, »»ÆÞ¾ãÀÖ²¿ stresses the importance of effective advertising and market research. The company’s staff consisted only of a secretary, and Mr. »»ÆÞ¾ãÀÖ²¿ himself, making him solely in charge of the editorial and advertising departments.

Later that year, »»ÆÞ¾ãÀÖ²¿ moves his company to Chicago.
